Melin Homes celebrated all things employment at its Employability Event held in Pontypool. The Pontypool-based housing association welcomed Welsh Government Minister for Skills and Science, Julie James, who was the keynote speaker.

The event also saw the Minister present awards to Melin residents who had undergone training to help them gain employment and improve their skills. The event was attended by numerous local politicians and stakeholders from the housing and employment sector.

Paula Kennedy, Melin CEO, said at the event; “We have always been an organisation that is much more than bricks and mortar. One of the most clear indications of this is our work with residents in helping them back to work through our Melin Works team. This event was a great way to shout about the great work the team do and a great chance to hear more about the Welsh Government vision for employability in Wales. Working with the Welsh Government, Local Government and funders is a vital partnership in delivering on this work and we made sure we recognised this important strategic partnership at the event.”

Skills and Science Minister, Julie James, added: ‘It was great to join Melin Homes for today’s jobs and skills celebration event and hear first hand the inspiring stories from those involved and those who have benefitted from the support available.

“As part of Taking Wales Forward we have made a commitment to re-shape our employability support for job ready individuals and those furthest from the labour market to help them acquire the skills and experience needed to gain and maintain sustainable employment and I will be outlining my proposals on how we intend to do this today [Tuesday 11 July].”

The Melin Works Team is there to provide residents with practical advice, support and help with finding a job or developing new skills. Since they began the team have helped over 2000 people into work, training and work placements. Residents who would like type of support can call 01495 745910 and ask for the Melin Works team.
